What pre-arranging means
Pre-arranging a funeral means choosing ahead of time the services and items you want, such as burial or cremation, a viewing or a ceremony, and a casket or urn, and recording those choices with a funeral home.
Many people also set money aside for those arrangements in advance. One common way is a pre-need funeral insurance policy. The policy is issued by an insurance company, and its benefit is meant to be used for the funeral arrangements you chose.
What a plan can include
- Professional services of the funeral home
- Casket or urn
- Burial or cremation
- Viewing and visitation
- Ceremony and venue
- Transportation
- Preparation and care
- Memorial items
- Coordination and permits
What your plan includes depends on the contract you sign with the funeral home and the policy you choose. Ask to see both in writing.
Questions worth asking
- Which funeral home will provide the services, and what does its contract list?
- Which items in the contract are covered as written, and which could cost more later?
- Which insurance company issues the policy, and how are premiums paid?
- What happens if I move, change funeral homes, or change my mind?
- What are the cancellation terms?
